THE FUTURE OF I G DESICCANTS

.

NEDEX PSgirlWhen Zeolite-based molecular sieve desiccants were first developed for use in insulating glass, they were just about as good as it could get. The whole concept of being able to selectively adsorb some vapours but not others was quite unique. Gas filling of units was on the increase, and the ability to grab water vapour but leave other gas molecules alone was tremendous. Earlier unit constructions contained crude desiccants like silica gel, or blends with 10 Angstrom desiccants.

.

These were designed to deal with solvent vapour and thereby prevent chemical fogging, a kind of rainbow condensation on the inside unit surface, because volatile solvents were often used to regulate the viscosity of sealant back then. But as well as dealing with those volatiles, they would also adsorb argon gas, causing under-pressure in the sealed unit cavity and distortion of the glass.

.

The advent of solvent-free sealant and selective molecular sieve desiccants meant that 3-Angstrom desiccant could be used to efficiently adsorb water vapour while the larger molecules of argon were not affected. At the same time, problems of units ‘pumping’ and putting unnecessary stress on the perimeter seal due to nitrogen being adsorbed and desorbed, over and over again as temperatures shifted, was virtually eliminated. A great bonus for users of hot sealants in particular.

.

But times move on, progress does not stop, and now there is a whole new generation of desiccant specifically designed for use in insulating glass. The production of zeolites is an environmentally dirty process requiring something like 20 tonnes of water to make 1 tonne of zeolites. And over the decades that has led to serious land and river pollution. Only recently have authorities clamped down with factory closures and heavy fines, resulting in rising prices and shortages.

.

World leaders, Nedex Group, have long ago refined a method that eliminates Zeolites replacing them with refined selected non-zeolite minerals. These are activated in a special process so that only water vapour is adsorbed but not argon or other gases, and to such an efficient degree that the available adsorption capacity is over 30% higher than all Desiccant Plantknown zeolite-based alternatives.

.

An independent test by TNO confirms capacities up to 28% at saturation where manufacturers of industry standard zeolite sieves generally claim between 18% and 20%.

.

Delta-T activity is high, typically 40 to 50oC. Gas desorption levels are tiny, well under half that specified by test regulations. And all deployed minerals are inert and harmless.

.

Environmentally friendly NANOMOL is manufactured entirely from naturally occurring minerals and binders. And the production process creates zero CO2, zero polluted waste water and requires no toxic chemicals.

.

With all these advantages, you’d expect to see a high price tag on NANOMOL. In fact the opposite is true as Nedex owns and controls all processes from mining the raw minerals through to the finished product.

.

NANOMOL’s density of around 900 is also important for I G unit life and is more than compensated for in price. Especially crucial when Warm-Edge plastic spacers are employed – due to the high wall thickness of those spacers, the internal cross section and therefore the desiccant volume is severely reduced by as much as 40%

.

Warning: Members of the Nedex team were able to film operatives in one factory in China, adding Palygorskite to their mix to reduce weight and density of their desiccant, a lightweight fibrous mineral that is dangerously close to asbestos. So not only dangerous to the planet, but dangerous for users’ health too.

.

NANOMOL is none of these. Specially formulated and processed in unique equipment designed by experts over a three year period, it is safe, friendly, and puts a very big tick in all the boxes.
Adsorption capacity, Gas desorption, Delta-T activity, Health & Safety, Environment …and Cost.

.

Thousands of tonnes a week are rolling out of the Nedex plant headed for major I G plants (and other desiccant suppliers) worldwide, in cartons, metal drums and BigBags.

.

The future of I G desiccants is set.
